Some information about the happenings of the Camporee that everyone should be aware of:
Inter troop activity
We are continuing the relatively new tradition of getting together with one or more troops and doing something with them. Scouting is about teaching the boys to be good, upstanding citizens in their communities, to teach them moral values and to help them to grow and become effective leaders in their homes, schools, churches and communities. This is a good opportunity for the boys to put some of these principles in to practice. Some ideas on things that you can do for or with another troop:
Invite one or more troops to a campfire program at your camp
Teach another troop or patrol a scout skill
Invite a troop do share a meal with your troop
Organize and participate in an activity with another troop (a game, a hike, compass course etc)
Do a service project for another troop
Give a gift to another troop
To get full credit for this, your Senior Patrol Leader should be explain your plan during checkin, and then on Saturday morning he will need to describe what the troop did.
Trade-o-ree
We will again be doing a Trade-o-ree this year. Have the boys come up with trade items to trade with other boys. The items should be of minimal value, and preferably things that the boys can make on their own. Last year, items that were really popular were items that were similar but different, with some of the differences being scarce. E.g. items that were the same except for color, with some colors being common and others being rare. The trade goods can be made at a troop level, a patrol level or at the individual level. Some examples of what you can use:
wooden tokens patches candy
neckerchief slides stickers stamps
fobs/key chains pins trinkets
coins matches postcards
rings fishing lures shells
collectable cards polished rocks etc…
Dutch oven/Utensil-less Cooking cook-off
On Saturday for lunch, we will gather together to have a dutch oven/utensil-less cooking cook off. There will be 2 categories for judging, a junior category and a senior category. All boys compete in the junior category and all leaders compete in the senior category. Cook your meal, and be sure to make an additional portion. The additional portion will be for the judges. You will eat what you prepare, though, this would be a great opportunity to get together with another troop and share your meal with them.
All rules of leave no trace must be practiced during the cook-off. All fires (including charcoals) must be in a fire pan, and at least 18 inches off the ground. There will be absolutely no exceptions to this so plan accordingly.
Outdoor Leader Training
We will be offering the outdoor leader training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters at camporee. If you haven't been through this training (which is required training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters), you can sign up while registering for camporee, or when you arrive at camporee. This is a great opportunity to do this training while your boys are participating the in the stations. We will need to have at least 4 leaders pre-register for this training in order for it to happen.
